Job Summary
The Network Engineer Principal’s role is to ensure the successful remote installation and stable operation of new distribution and access layer network hardware at remote customer sites worldwide. This includes planning, developing, installing, configuring, and optimizing all network hardware, software, and communication links.
Principal Accountabilities
  • - Works under general supervision and applies network engineering and architecture knowledge on diverse problems where analysis of situation requires in-depth evaluation of various factors at remote OCONUS sites.
  • - Designs, installs, and supports, new network hardware and software infrastructure deployments.
  • - Provides right-sized network solutions that meet all program and enterprise requirements.
  • - Allocates network resources and monitors network performance and usage during and after the hardware deployment phase.
  • - Ensures most cost effective and efficient use of network hardware being deployed.
  • - Ensures all network hardware complies with industry, regulatory, and enterprise standards.
  • - Troubleshoots, analyses, and resolves faults in operational networks, to include conformity to all enterprise standardization and design policies.
  • - Tracks all new network hardware deployed, to include updating site inventory and device reporting to enterprise tools.
  • - Occasionally provides training and technical support for installation, deployment and integration team members to ensure hardware integration and installation procedures and policies are correctly implemented.
  • - Works closely with the program technical lead to write, validate, and implement accurate technical process documentation that is reviewed and approved by the Enterprise Network Architects and the standardization working group.
  • - Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills
  • - Working technical knowledge of Cisco IOS, IOS-XE and NX-OS platforms.
  • - Working technical knowledge of current Cisco hardware platforms, protocols, and standards, to include the Catalyst 3850, 4500-E, 4500-X, 9000 series, and Nexus 3000 series switches.
  • - Proven experience with hardware installation and troubleshooting, remote IOS upgrade, VLAN implementation and restructuring, IPv4 routing, SNMPv3, VTP, TACACS/AAA, ACLs.
  • - Experience configuring and troubleshooting EIGRP and OSPF routing.
  • - Clear understanding of the program and enterprise goals and objectives, adherence to enterprise change management and security policies, and all directives regarding privileged network access.
  • - Ability to assist remote technical staff with little or entry-level knowledge of networking to mount new hardware, migrate connections to new network devices and re-establish all services, and work with onsite personnel to troubleshoot all connectivity issues.
  • - Work with remote technical staff at more than 400 CONUS and OCONUS sites to complete network hardware installations, sometimes requiring work hours outside of normal business hours based on the remote site time zone and schedule.
  • - Strong customer service skills working with a diverse, multi-national customer base, and the ability to simplify and communicate complex technical concepts, both verbally and written.
  • - Highly self-motivated and works effectively within a small team of engineers or independently, with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • - Completes all assigned tasks in a timely manner, and provides daily updates using web-based project management and reporting tool, as well as weekly updates at project status meetings.
  • - Keen attention to detail, with proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • - Ability to maintain current Cisco certification level.
  • - Demonstrate good written and oral communication and interpersonal skills with internal and external customers.
  • - Ability to uphold integrity and confidentiality with privileged access to sensitive networks.
  • - Active Top Secret security clearance.

Experience & Education
  • - College diploma or university degree in the field of computer science preferred.
  • - 8 years network engineering experience.
  • - Cisco CCNA Routing/Switching Certification Required
  • - Cisco CCNP Routing/Switching Certification Preferred
  • - Microsoft Excel proficiency using advanced features to maintain network device configuration templates.
  • - Microsoft Visio to create and maintain network diagrams.
  • - Cisco APIC-EM and Python a major plus.

  • - Must be able to lift 50 pounds to waist level and 30 pounds to shoulder height.
